Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake

“Three dark queens
Are born in a glen,
Sweet little triplets
Will never be friends

Three dark sisters
All fair to be seen,
Two to devour
And one to be Queen”

Synopsis
When kingdom come, there will be one.

In every generation on the island of Fennbirn, a set of triplets is born—three queens, all equal heirs to the crown and each possessor of a coveted magic. Mirabella is a fierce elemental, able to spark hungry flames or vicious storms at the snap of her fingers. Katharine is a poisoner, one who can ingest the deadliest poisons without so much as a stomachache. Arsinoe, a naturalist, is said to have the ability to bloom the reddest rose and control the fiercest of lions.

But becoming the Queen Crowned isn’t solely a matter of royal birth. Each sister has to fight for it. And it’s not just a game of win or lose…it’s life or death. The night the sisters turn sixteen, the battle begins.

The last queen standing gets the crown.

My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐

Ok, now that ending got me hooked for more! Damn, I wasn't expecting it to be that good. I mean it took me forever to get into this and felt compelled to DNF about a third of the way through. However, kept going after hearing how good it gets. I was not disappointed! I am ready for the sequel and am hoping it doesn't start as slow and confusing as this was.

The story follows girl triplets; Katherine, Arsinoe, Mirabella, destined to be queens on Fennbirn, an island stranded away from other civilisation. On their 16th birthday, one of them has to be the first to kill both of her sisters and become the real Queen. These girls have not seen each other since they were little and been brought up to hate each other. Each given a unique ability. Katherine, a poisoner; Arsinoe, a naturalist, and Mirabella, an elemental. This plot intrigued me and stuck out to others I have been reading lately.

Anyway, so Katherine is a poisoner and a pretty bad one at that. She is supposed to be immune to poisons but instead isn't so she has slowly been given poisons to strengthen her immunity. The has caused her to become frail, lose hair and form scabs on her arms. Katherine's story was an interesting one but found myself not liking her until the very end due to the number of characters that I didn't like in her perspective. I also love how creepy her character was and the darkness of her chapters.

There is also Arsinoe, the other triplet who is a naturalist. She also isn't the best naturalist but tries her hardest to let the world know she is because she literally has no powers. Her story was by far my favourite as there was a lot more happening in her chapters. I also really liked her friend Jules but at times was annoyed that her chapters were focusing on Jules rather than Arsinoe.

Finally, there is Mirabella who is the kindest and the strongest. She is an elemental but cannot imagine herself ever coming close to killing her sisters. She has dreams of her sisters before they were separated and still in a way grieves their absence. To be honest I kinda got bored of Mirabella pretty quickly. She just wasn't exciting like the other two sisters which made me want to skip over her chapters.

Okay so I know I hyped this book up quite a bit at the start but that was only because I absolutely loved the ending. I feel like other than this book has an interesting plot, the likes stop here. Although their world was interesting, there was no backstory which got me so frustrated and leaving me with so many questions. Like what was the reason for some of the rules and why did the sisters have to be separated? Agh this was annoying.

There was waaaay too many point of views to count which confused me so much at the start. There were also too many characters introduced in just a few chapters which was the main reason I wanted to DNF. After I got over my confusion, things started getting better. BUT, things were so slow and took a while at times to get to a fast-paced, exciting part.

I have heard that the sequel is fast paced all the way so I hope this is true. I'm also hoping for there to be more world building and backstory on the characters as it was annoying being given little information on this. Anyway if you can get past the slowness of this book and are patient then, you SHOULD read this because the ending is definitely worth it!
